Lithium 2010

•January 17, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Well, 2010 is here. While the prospect of a new year does not particularly appeal to me on a personal level (with a seemingly inescapable dead-end job, mounting bills/debt, chronic depression/insomnia, and most of my friends exhibiting similar, if not worse symptoms), musically it will be very interesting, at least in terms of activity.

To begin with, I apologize for the somewhat embarrassing lack of regular updates. To be honest, I really cannot claim that ‘I was busy’ for all the delays. A general sense of lethargy, disillusionment, and artistic block/disinterest contributed to the inactivity as well. Hopefully I will get everything (including the Argali site) up-to-date soon.

Terra Engine has a few things coming soon: the “Apaosha” five-minute single on Witte Dood (no ETA), the “Alchemy” full-length on Timetheory (no ETA, within the next few weeks), a compilation track for the “We Are Timetheory” compilation (coming Jan. 18?), and a remix track for an upcoming Timetheory release (no ETA, details forthcoming).

Beyond these confirmed releases, my main musical concern, besides that of maintaining Argali Records, is developing/releasing the Terra Engine re-release series. This will include the main Terra Engine albums, featuring slightly remastered/optimized tracks, with expanded artwork, linear notes, and in some instances extra and/or unreleased tracks. Nihil Obstat re-releases are not out of the question, although it would be a lower priority. Finally, a release compiling various compilation tracks, more unreleased tracks (if applicable), and other rarities (such as the ‘arguably better’ tracks from the “Menhir Compilation”, older/unreleased Orphan/NCFC tracks, etc) is also being considered.

The last two months has seen me working, when I can, on some more experimental material, most likely to be released under the Terra Engine name. It probably will not a full-length, although some of the material will be released in various forms on future EPs, singles, compilations, and so on (currently waiting to hear back from Witte Dood to see if they will accept my second single, “Eclipse”). In the future, I plan on releasing most of my full-lengths on Argali Records. Although I had previously vowed not to do this, in the end it is easier to do so, given that I can retain complete artistic control over my own work and if gets delayed or takes forever to get released, the only person I have to blame is myself.

Please note that this currently only is planned for full-lengths. For EPs, singles, compilation tracks, remixes, and such, I still plan on working with different labels, some old, and hopefully some new (more details when they become concrete).

Since the last update, Argali Records released two albums: an album/EP by Buben Vs. Nasta Labada, and an album by Rusted Spheres (both have received some very nice comments by random listeners). Forthcoming are two more The Jesus Fish Experience albums (no ETA yet, but hopefully by February both will be released). I have begun taking demos again, but (this is important) I cannot give an ETA on when an album will be released, although I can, as usual, give you a confirmation of whether or not we would release the album.

Nihil Obstat is still on hiatus. It is not dead, but until further notice, I have no plans for any future material.

Check back here soon, as I will update the page when the various upcoming material is released, in addition to updating the ‘discography’ section, etc. Also, when the re-masters are complete, I will also add a short write-up on how to obtain them, what they include, and other snippits of info.

Hope your 2010 is proceeding nicely, with well-meaning New Years Resolutions still going strong (mine caved in after about a week or so).

Cheers! :D

As usual, this is a placeholder. The Argali Records Netlabel WordPress site is now up-to-date with the new Nihil Obstat remix compilation album (more details and full download here). Terra Engine has a new drone single coming soon on Witte Dood and is currently working on the art layout for the fourth Terra Engine full-length.

More info and even more updates soon…

UPDATES FORTHCOMING…

Sorry for the silence. A massive update and re-design is coming soon, along with current news and other nonsense. While you wait, I have included before the ‘exhaustively complete’ discography, featuring everything worth mentioning to date (in other words, since I started releasing work in 2007). I’ll be updating the ‘discogs’ pages on the right very soon, although they will probably not include all of the ‘no longer available’ releases, or some of the extra compilations I have created recently.

This, to my knowledge, is the most up-to-date discography listing available. I started
’seriously’ creating music in 2007 (although I started in 2001), and there are a few
albums from that time period which were later remixed/remastered into later albums. All of my material that I have released so far is available for free download. Did you enjoy or hate something? Feel free to message back; always looking for feedback. You can also listen to most of my music on my Myspace profile (via embeded Archive.org players): http://www.myspace.com/johnlithiummusic

Thanks again. :D

Sorry for the lack of updates. Besides recently completing a spring course at the local university, also have been working full-time for the last few weeks. Have not done much on the music front recently (besides a few releases on Argali Records). Hopefully will be able to work on new projects soon.

Terra Engine : Time Distortion LP Now Available Through Timetheory Netlabel (Free Download)

Edit: The discography pages are now up-to-date. At this point I am not going to be including the Nihilist Fish Engine Phenomenon album or contributions to The Jesus Fish Experience, because that is covered in the Argali Records WordPress page.

Terra Engine: Time Distortion

I. Deuterium Fusion
II. Gravastar
III. Approaching Event Horizon
IV. The Singularity Draws Near
V. Contact Imminent

http://www.archive.org/details/tmth-00E

A collection of subtle and radical remixes of material from Jon 7’s “Time” album (http://www.archive.org/details/tmth013). All tracks were utilized in one form or another, except for the closing track “Newfoundland time”. Due to the nature of the recordings (which often feature intricate and subtle elements) and low bass frequencies, optimal results can be achieved by downloading the songs (rather than listening to them through the player) and wearing headphones.

Featuring dark ambient/drone from the cold void of the outer spaces, this release also features Terra Engine’s first venture into ’space music/space ambient’, as well as various strains of experimental electronica and avant-garde auditory collage. Also features FANTASTIC graphic design by Jon7.

This album is dedicated to Tim Conrardy (whose presets can be found at various points throughout the album) and Patrick McGoohan.

In short, this album is a concept album depicting, in an auditory format, the journey of light from a developing star (“Deuterium Fusion”) to the event horizon of a black hole (or equivalent celestial structure, such as a “Gravastar”), finally making contact with the singularity and proceeding through and beyond it (should it be possible to do so). Throughout this process, you will find that time is being slowed, stretched, and altered the closer one approaches the singularity.

The actual contact and ‘traveling through’ the singularity is almost completely beyond theoretical speculation.

-The various discography pages are now (hopefully) completely up-to-date.
-Hopefully I will be able to complete the Argali Records Netlabel site soon and release the first album. I was wanting to do this earlier, but have been somewhat busy as of late.
-Currently, I am working on the next Terra Engine album and a remix of a friend’s album. These sessions have been somewhat hit-or-miss, mainly due to my increasingly high standards of what I would consider a ‘finished mix’. Also, not having a long stretches of time to work on them also complicates progress.
-However, a friend of mine is also remixing “The Remixable Stranger”. More details when I have them.
-The long awaited Nihil Obstat album “Empire” is now out! (http://www.twilightluggage.com/rel/TLMP11).
-I have been updating my Virb site…slowly. You can now download Terra Engine’s “Power Ambience” and “Khvarenah” albums there (although the original Archive.org sites are also listed there as well). More files will hopefully be made available soon.
-I still have my Last.FM pages, but do not expect those to be updated often (if ever). The upload process is simply too slow and error-prone; it rarely uploads anything correctly.
-Recently, I also have been busy with work and academic concerns, so if I am not getting many things done or accomplished, that is why. Sorry about that.
-Take care, everyone.

-Hopefully will be able to have a huge/comprehensive update soon.

-Nihil Obstat: The Repo Man EP, released through Love Torture Netlabel (http://www.archive.org/details/LTR155). A mixture of hi-fidelity and lo-fidelity noise/power electronics. Featuring two tracks of newer material and two tracks of highly remixed older material (pre-NO source material). If you enjoy early Controlled Bleeding, intense non-verbal vocalizations, or highly intense sound sculpture, than you might find pleasure in this release.

-Also, a music video was created for the second half of the album. Enjoy a mutated glimpse of the 1950’s! (http://www.mediafire.com/?goce5mqmnzq).

-The next Nihil Obstat album is forthcoming on Twilight Luggage Records. More details soon…

-I am beginning to develop a netlabel. More details coming soon.

-A friend of mine remixed and augmented material specifically released/designed for remixing a few months ago, resulting in the first collaborative effort between Terra Engine/Nihil Obstat and The Jesus Fish Experience. This new project (which may have future releases) is known as “The Nihilist Fish Engine Phenomenon”. It is scheduled to be the first release on the netlabel I am currently developing.

-Speaking of remixing, a remix of the first volume of “The Remixable Stranger” (http://www.archive.org/details/TheRemixableStranger) is also forthcoming. Stay tuned…

-I am also highly honored and pleased to be included on the latest Not Normal That Shit compilation (http://www.mystahr.com/NNTS05.html), on the “Moon” section of the release. If you haven’t checked out these wonderful collections yet, now is the time to do so!!!

Lately I have been VERY busy. Just how busy. Well, in addition to arranging a ‘retrospective’ Nihil Obstat EP (that also contains new material), I also learned that a fellow musician friend has completed his contributions towards a collaborative remix album, utilizing elements from the “The Remixable Stranger Volume II” collection (which was released and distributed privately, due to lack of interest in the first volume). So now, I have to arrange graphics/layout for the Nihil Obstat EP, determine how to release the collaboration, complete final descriptive documents for both albums, prepare some promotional material for the upcoming Nihil Obstat LP (to be released on Twilight Luggage), continue to promote the Dirgehead Distribution Compilation (BUY AN ALBUM), the Dustin Must Die Compilation, and the Poorhouse Netlabel Compilation (all which have various Nihil Obstat tracks on them).

It is somewhat quieter on the Terra Engine front. Besides the aforementioned collaboration album (which had both TE and NO elements in them), not much happening besides an upcoming Timetheory Netlabel compilation. After all the NO madness dies down, I would like to start working on the next TE album. I also have an offer for anyone who donates via Paypal to receive a special ‘donation subscriber only’ EP/LP. The only trouble with this is that I need to actually receive A donation before I decide to start on it.

Also, thank you all who decided to buy a CD-R copy of “The Mysterious Stranger”. It’s not a limited release (as far as I know), so don’t worry about it running out any time soon…

I also have my job, which takes up the remainder of my spare time. And sleeping (what little of it I do). So if my various websites are not always completely up-to-date, I apologize in advance. Special apologies to any of the people who reguarly read my “Music For The Rest Of Us” review blog. When I can, I’d like to start a regular entry schedule, even if it is only once a month (the last two reviews have been at least a year apart, I believe).

Holidays and my birthday might also eat away more precious free time.

More info later.

Massive update to the Myspace pages…the Nihil Obstat page now has the ‘old school’ Archive.org players again, for easy listening right on the profile! The long promised update to this website’s ‘discography’ page should arrive by tomorrow. Hopefully.
